Yoga for Mental Health - what should we be teaching?

Please join us to meet other Northern NSW yoga teachers in our community, participate in discussion, and earn 3 CPD points. This workshop, presented by Maria Kirsten, will focus on Yoga for Mental Health. The program is open to all Yoga Teachers, members and non-members alike.

About the Presenter - Maria Kirsten

Maria is originally from New York City but has lived and taught yoga in Australia for 20 years. She is a yoga therapist, occupational therapist, yoga teacher and teacher trainer. Maria specialises in making yoga accessible for students of all ages and levels of experience and ability. She uses her understanding of anatomy and functional movement to empower and educate students to individualise and embody their yoga. Maria's teaching style is unconventional, practical and fun, with lots of "real life" application and a big picture approach to yoga practice.

What's on the agenda?

The intention of this workshop is for teachers to explore teaching yoga in a way that supports their own and their students' mental health. We will reorient the focus from the teaching of poses and practices to using poses and practices as opportunities to sense internally, to explore curiously, and to respond compassionately to challenges and opportunities as they arise. This workshop is not about in teaching yoga for any particular diagnosis, nor is it about herding people with mental health problems together into a class. It is about understanding mental health from a yogic framework and from the framework of recovery, it is about understanding how yoga works on a scientific and experiential level, and it is about knowing how to create a safe, ethically responsible, trauma informed environment in which to offer yoga.

There will be 1.5 hours of discussion and practice throughout the event.
