NeLi (Janelle Louise) Martin (BA Hons Psych, Dip Yoga Teaching) is a psychologist and yoga and meditation and dance teacher. NeLi has been curious about the mind for most of her life. She first registered as a psychologist in Qld in 1991 and has worked in child protection, juvenile justice, domestic violence, organisational and private practice settings since 1989. She integrates psychology training with many years of Buddhist Dharma mindfulness study and practice together with Yoga Teaching and practice. She has been a yoga teacher since 1998 and Dharma practitioner since 2000 and is a Member of the Insight Meditation Teachers of Australia. She has been teaching a conscious dance practice (Dharma Dance) since 2016.

In her psychology work, she has embraced ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) since discovering it in 2007. She was delighted to discover that ancient philosophies and techniques could be uncovered from a psychological perspective and could be subject to scientific rigour. She has worked with people on a range of issues including depression, anxiety / panic attacks, stress, anger and rage, relationships, addiction, schizophrenia, eating disorders, grief and loss, chronic pain, self esteem and confidence, performance enhancement, work stress, leadership, motivation, emotional intelligence, performance pressure. She is often inspired by the courage and persistence of people she works with.

Her own mindfulness training has supported her personally and professionally since 2000. She has sat many long and short retreats at Gaia House in Devon UK, living in the UK for 14 years. www.gaiahouse.co.uk - NeLi was a manager at this retreat centre over a couple of years. This centre is affiliated with Spirit Rock in California and IMS in Massachusetts, USA. Most of the founding teachers at Gaia House and the sister centres were influenced by Theravada traditions, particularly the Tai Forest and Mahasi Traditions. However, Stephen and Martine Bachelor were more influenced by Korean Zen (and Stephen also by Tibetan Geluk). NeLi began teaching meditation in 2005 being mentored by Catherine McGee, who teaches at Gaia House and other places in the UK, NZ and Israel. NeLi also spent 6 months as assistant to Roshi Joan Halifax at Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico www.upaya.org This is a Maezumi Roshi, White Plum Sangha – a synthesis of both Soto and Rinzai Zen traditions. She initially sat with a Tibetan Rigpa group and attended retreats with FWBO - Friends of the Western Buddhist Order, but professes to know less about them and doesn’t currently practice in these traditions. Currently in Australia, she sits with insight teachers, Geoff Simpson locally in Brisbane and has attended the Dharma Facilitators Program lead by Radha Nicholson since 2007. She has also sat retreats with Patrick Kearney. See www.dharmasalon.net & www.dharma.org.au NeLi has guidance to teach from Stephen Batchelor’s Secular Dharma perspective.

NeLi completed her yoga teacher training with the British Wheel of Yoga. Initially influenced by Alexander technique and Ashtanga, Iyengar, Bihar and Viniyoga traditions, NeLi now teaches an integrated approach which is currently inspired by the work of the late Vanda Scaravelli and Anusara Yoga. This work is strong and gentle and encourages mindful awareness through aligned movement into and out of yoga asana.

NeLi strongly values the aspiration or intention towards freedom from suffering. The method or means to explore this is awareness. Awareness is cultivated in body, mind and heart by the connecting thread of the breath. NeLi’s work in yoga, meditation and psychology is her committed action to explore what it means for us all to embody freedom. see www.mindfulness-practice.com for psychology work and nelimartin.com for all other offerings.

""As our awareness grows, so does that of the web, for we are the universe becoming conscious of itself. With sensibilities evolved through millennia of interaction, we can turn now and know that web as our home. It both cradles us and calls us to weave "

what people are saying about Neli Martin

Roxanne

I felt safe and supported during the mindfulness meditation and yoga retreats with NeLi. Her kindness and compassion as a human being creates this environment. She teaches yoga in a way that invites participation and inquiry. Its ok for me to be exactly as I am, body and mind. I am ok to rest in either child pose or dog pose depending on how my body is doing in that moment. It was also a relief to allow any mind states to simply be themselves too. Ive been able to utilise some great tools to navigate through life. It was also fun to learn yoga dance!

Lucy

Each time I attend a yoga or mindfulness training offered by NeLi I arrive in need of tending. Whether its solace, rest, energy or learning that I seek, I know Ill be offered a chance to find it. In workshops and retreats, NeLi creates a space where you can find ease quickly and begin to build the confidence to practice new skills. She is warm, funny and experienced as a teacher and as a student, I couldnt ask for anything more.

For me, the guidance and teachings by NeLi feels authentic; they are from real life experience, are relevant and from the heart. This greatly enhances my learning and spiritual well being :)
